I almost do not cut it only sometimes i can cut a shoot that goes beyond. These include blue star juniper. Light pruning also can encourage robust growth and branching to create more fullness. This can rob the tree of energy and slow down its growth.

The new growth will help hide the unsightly cuts. Avoid trimming the hardwood sections of the juniper and only do so if it is absolutely necessary. Among juniper shrubs some varieties grow very slowly and almost do not need pruning. However you can prevent the juniper from spreading outside of your desired planting site by keeping it trimmed.

Pruning hardwood growth on a creeping juniper will not induce the hardwood to sprout new growth. While overgrown juniper pruning has its limits it is possible to trim your plant down to a more manageable shape. Trimming young shoots may also encourage branching and more robust growth. I also have one for several years.

The key to pruning juniper is to leave areas with dormant bud on each branch you trim. In general the best time for pruning junipers is in the early spring before new stems and leaves appear. If you want a manicured look on those creeping junipers instead of a natural rough edged juniper you can use this technique. One good place to start is the removal of any dead or leafless branches these can be cut off at the trunk.

To ensure the proper planting depth and reduce the chance of damaging the juniper s root make sure the hole twice as wide and 2 inches shallower than the root. Blue rug juniper does not usually need regular pruning except when growth gets unruly or disease has damaged the plant. Blue rug juniper doesn t really need to be pruned unless the growth has become unruly or portions of the plant are damaged or diseased. You can also remove any branches that are overlapping or sticking out too far.

If you prune a juniper after its spring burst of foliage the leaves you cut will not be replaced by new foliage until next year.
